BMI Calculator (US)
Calculate your Body-mass Index
Your body-mass index ("BMI") measures your height/weight ratio. Compute it by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. We will help you convert your height to inches and weight to pounds if you use the english system.
For instance, if your height is 1.6 meters (5' 3"), the divisor of the calculation will be (1.6 * 1.6) = 2.56 If your weight is 63.64 kilograms (140 lbs), then your BMI is 24.85 (63.64 /2.56).
People with BMI's between 19 and 22 live longest. Death rates are noticeably higher for people with indexes 25 and above.
To figure your BMI, enter your height and weight in the boxes below, and then click "calculate". This is the American version of the calculation because you must enter your height in feet and inches, and your weight in pounds. These are converted to metric values before figuring your BMI.
Note: your browser must support Javascript, or this will not work.
Also note: if you are exactly 5 feet or 6 feet tall, put a 0 in the inches box. The result is "infinity" if you leave the inches box empty.
