All the Facts

Dr. Robinson has taught other physicians in the use of hair removal lasers. With our laser we have treated many men and women of all ethnicities without complication and with excellent results. Many of our patients have offered to make themselves available to you to ask them directly about their experience here at the Center. No matter where the hair is on your body that you want reduced, know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Many of our female patients have as much hair on their faces as men. We can help! For bikini's, underarms, legs, breasts, abdomen and backs we do equally well. We can even do your unibrow safely and effectively.

We offer the latest in laser technology using the highly effective Cynosure laser system. Laser hair removal/reduction is so different from waxing in that the follicles are reduced permanently and the patient is very comfortable.

Due to the way hair follicles grow, laser hair removal/reduction typically requires 4-6 sessions, each scheduled about 4 weeks apart. We know from years of experience that you will need 4-6 sessions to achieve the best results. We believe lasers should be in the hands of trained professionals so our procedures are done exclusively by Dr. Robinson and/or our tecnician who has received several hundred hours of training. While laser hair removal/reduction is not a surgical procedure, experience with lasers is critical to prevent complications and help you with special unique problems you may have.Laser hair removal/reduction is different from waxing in that the follicles are reduced permanently and the patient is very comfortable.

To make an appointment call the office at 843-769-2229 or send an e mail to . We also can arrange for a free demonstration in our office. We know you'll be pleased.

How does the Cynosure Smartpil II differ from older laser systems?1. How does Cynosure Smartpil II laser hair removal work?

Return to indexThe Cynosure Smartpil II laser is a non-invasive light therapy device specifically designed to eliminate undesired hair from all parts of the body. The Cynosure Smartpil II laser generates a pulse of intense, concentrated light which is directed through a small, cooled hand piece which is gently applied to the treatment site.

This laser energy passes through the skin to the hair follicle, where the energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and hair follicle, causing selective damage to the hair root without damaging delicate pores and structures of the skin. The laser is pulsed, or "turned on", for only a fraction of a second. The duration of the pulses is carefully determined so that laser energy will be absorbed by the hair follicle without transferring excessive heat to the surrounding skin.

Some of the hair which was in the treated follicles is wiped off immediately after treatment, and the rest is shed over the next 2-3 weeks. The hair roots which have been destroyed are reabsorbed by the body.

The surface of the skin is protected by cooling gel pads applied immediately before and after treatment, and by a gold plated cooling head which glides over the skin (Cynosure Smartpil II) half a second before the laser beam. This selectivity helps to protect the skin, while effectively treating the unwanted hair.

Unlike "hair-by-hair" treatments like electrolysis, the laser uses a wide beam which treats many hairs at once. Because the Cynosure Smartpil II laser can treat dozens of hairs with each pulse, it is possible to treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. The Cynosure Smartpil II laser can be used just about anywhere on the body, and usually requires no anesthesia or other treatment. Even sensitive areas such as the nipples, upper lip and bikini line can be treated easily and with minimal discomfort.

The system's unique design allows us to customize treatment, according to your hair and skin color, hair texture, and location on the body.

Cynosure Smartpil II laser treatment is a safe, fast, gentle and effective method for hair removal. In just a few treatment sessions using the gentle power of lasers, you can greatly improve the appearance of skin which is disfigured by unwanted hair.

Other laser and intense pulsed light systems include: Intense pulsed light - these systems are flash lamps producing a spectrum of light energy rather than laser light. Intense pulsed light systems tend to stun rather than kill hair follicles, so that there is often an unacceptable amount of hair regrowth, even after many "intense pulsed light" treatments.

First generation Ruby 694 nanometer (Epilaser, Epitouch, Chromos) Second generation Alexandrite 755 nanometer (Epitouch ALEX, Photogenica LIPR, GentleLASE)

Third generation Diode 800-810 nanometer (LightSheer, Apex)These relatively short wavelength lasers can produce good results in some circumstances, but because they produce light which has a shorter wavelength, their laser energy both scatters more in the skin, and is mostly absorbed in the top few millimeters of the skin, above many of the hair roots. This means that sometimes not enough energy reaches the hair roots, where it is needed. These short wavelength, lower power systems are effective in some cases, but in other cases may only stun rather than destroy many of the hair roots and therefore sometimes cause temporary rather than permanent hair reduction. Short wavelength lasers can be difficult or impossible to safely use on people with dark, tanned or black skin. The cooling system in 800 nm lasers usually relies on a sapphire window, which is only 1/10 as efficient as the gold plated copper cooling head in the Cynosure. Because the sapphire window of the 800 nm lasers has to be pressed on the skin while the laser is triggered, there is a risk that stray hairs will be burned into the skin. By comparison, there is no contact between the laser aperture and the skin when the Cynosure Smartpil II laser beam is applied to your skin.

By contrast, the Fourth Generation Cynosure Smartpil II laser uses the longest available, deeper penetrating 1064 nanometer wavelength. Cynosure Smartpil II reaches even the deepest hair roots, which can be 4-6 mm below the skin surface in some cases.

The long 1064 nanometer wavelength of the Cynosure Smartpil II makes it possible to safely and effectively treat all people -- even those with tanned, very dark or black skin. Like all lasers, the Cynosure works more efficiently on light colored skin -- so to minimize the number of treatments you need, try not to have a fresh suntan when you come in for treatment.

Cynosure Smartpil II also allows the operator to adjust the duration of the pulse of laser energy to best suit the thickness of the hair shafts on different parts of your body. Some older laser systems lack this degree of fine control.

The cooling head on the Cynosure laser provides an extra margin of safety and comfort, allows the operator a clear view of the area to be treated, and does not require pressure on your skin.

Laser Vein

The New Body Center is proud to offer the newest technology in laser vein removal using our Cynosure Laser System.Spider veins or telangiectasias are the small, red, pink and blue blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face and leg. Varicose veins are usually larger in diameter and may appear raised with a bluish color.

Millions of people suffer from unsightly spider veins. Even though this condition poses no medical risk, many people would like to improve their cosmetic appearance. The procedure is fast, and effective, allowing the removal of multiple areas in just a few minutes, a true breakthrough in medical technology.

What does the treatment feel like?

A pulse of laser light feels like a small pinch or sting similar to the snap of rubber band against the skin. No local anesthesia is typically required and the procedure is tolerated well by majority of people. A prescription topical anesthetic can be provided for people with very sensitive skin. Following the treatment, the pain is usually minimal or nonexistent. How many treatments are needed?

Depending on the size of the veins, one to three treatments six weeks apart maybe required. If your body tends to develop vascular problems, you will most likely come back for additional treatments.Does it hurt?

Some patients find the first laser treatment more uncomfortable than subsequent treatments. You may feel a stinging sensation during the treatment; however, use of topical anesthesia can greatly reduce that sensation. What are the possible side effects?

Side effects are uncommon. Redness and/or mild swelling at the treatment site may occur, though this typically is gone within hours. How much does it cost?

Prices vary for each patient depending on the type of laser procedure area of the body to be treated, and the number of treatments needed.

How to Shop for Laser Hair Removal/ Reduction Services

1 - Be sure your procedures are done by a doctor or specially trained nurse or Esthetician as we do.

2 - Understand that you will need a minimum of 4-6 sessions to get the result you are after. Factor that into your total cost based on the ad. Based on the people who come to us after getting less than great outcomes elsewhere, we believe this is important. The result you expect is important. Some people are left with no hair while others are left with some hair which is much finer than when they started. The bottom line is you should expect to shave much less and have less in the way of razor bumps if you get them. We are careful to be certain that everyone understands that you can not predict who will be left with no hair and who will have a 70% reduction. At the end of the day, our patients are all satisfied with our efforts and their results.

3 - Just because the ad says "doctor supervised" doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is in the office or will ever see you. Ask if in fact the person doing your procedure will be a doctor or a nurse or if you will be evaluated by a doctor. At the New Body Center, you will be viewed by a qualified physician.
4 - There are several lasers that are FDA approved for permanent laser hair reduction. Some ads will say that their laser is the only one approved. This is just wrong! We believe the Cynosure Laser because of its unique wavelengths and the power it allows us to deliver, is the most effective for hair removal/reduction in all skin types. Ask what type of laser they use. None of the ads I've seen tell this information. Remember, many places have older lasers that just aren't as effective.

5 - When asking for bikini hair removal/reduction, be sure you understand what "they mean" by bikini. Many centers actually limit the bikini to 2 inches or so to the side of your bathing suit line. To do more may cost more. We don't do this.If you have any other questions, please see our Laser F.A.Q. page, call us at 843-769-2229, or email us at and we'll be happy to discuss them with you.

Laser Genesis

Have vibrant looking skin, remove wrinkles, rosacea and give yourself a more youthful appearance with Laser Facial Rejuvenation.

For vibrant, healthy looking skin, Laser Genesis Skin Therapy is an innovative, technologically advanced way to promote vibrant and healthy-looking skin in both men and women. Now you too can have a youthful appearance by treating those conditions that are typically associated with premature signs of aging such as unsightly facial veins, redness and sun-damaged skin.

What is Facial Rejuvenation?

Our FDA approved laser procedure will rejuvenate your face giving you a more youthful appearance using a safe, effective, and painless technique. It will reduce your wrinkles, tighten pores, and stimulate collagen to dramatically smooth your skin. This procedure also reduces some of the redness in your cheeks for a better complexion.
What does Laser Genesis do?

Laser Genesis is a non-ablative procedure that can reduce visible facial vessels as well as diffuse redness by gently warming the upper dermis, improving the appearance of your skin. The result is a healthy-looking and vibrant appearance.
How does Laser Genesis differ from other procedures?

The Laser Genesis procedure utilizes laser technology that can safely, discretely and effectively treat small targets like fine undesirable facial vessels or vessels that cause diffuse redness. Unlike many other treatment methods, Laser Genesis is a comfortable, non-ablative form of skin therapy. This means you will be able to see subtle yet consistent results after each treatment, without the unwanted side effects such as bruising or excessive skin irritation. Your therapy can be performed in a relaxed, comfortable manner without the use of general or local anesthesia, gel or cream.
What areas can be treated?

Unlike many other procedures available today, with Laser Genesis skin therapy, we can safely treat your entire neck and facial area and chest if desired.
What are facial vessels or telangiectasia?

Telangiectasia or facial vessels are dilated capillaries that commonly appear on the surface of the face and in areas around the nose, cheeks and above the neckline. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that are present throughout the body. Prolonged sun exposure, aging, trauma and other factors can cause capillaries to become dilated and visible. There is also a hereditary factor in developing facial telangiectasia. Laser Genesis therapy will help your appearance by treating any visible trace of these unsightly veins.
What is diffuse redness?

Diffuse redness is a general appearance of facial redness, such as rosy cheeks. As with facial telangiectasia, this condition is a result of dilated capillaries, however the appearance is more of general redness rather than discrete well-defined vessels. The most commonly affected areas are the nose, forehead and cheeks. Diffuse redness is often associated with a condition called rosacea and it can be hereditary. Laser Genesis therapy will help your appearance by gently treating and reducing this condition.
What can I expect before the treatment?

There are no complicated pre-treatment rituals with this procedure. Prior to the actual Laser Genesis treatment, you will be asked to remove your make-up or moisturizers and in some cases, you may be asked to shave the area to be treated so as not to interfere with the laser treatment. We will review and assist with all pre-treatment requirements.
How many treatments do I need?

The treatment results are often very subtle. On average you may require 4 to 6 treatments in order to achieve the results you are looking for. Every patient's conditions and needs vary.
Is the treatment painful?

No. Laser Genesis is a comfortable, non-ablative, non-invasive treatment. Unlike other laser treatments, it does not wound the skin's surface therefore virtually eliminating the need for complicated post-treatment care. Typically patients describe the treatment as a gentle warming of the surface. The treatment does not require any anesthetics, creams or gel.
What results can I expect after the treatment?

Immediately after the treatment you will experience some minor redness. The redness typically lasts only a few hours. Patients often describe the treatment as relaxing and therapeutic with visible results that are subtle yet noticeable. You can expect to immediately return to normal activities utilizing sunscreen if participating in outdoor activities.
What are the possible side effects?

Although most patients report few, if any, side effects, the most commonly noticed might be a slight redness that disappears within a few hours after the treatment. Consult with us for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment. If you need additional information or would like to schedule an appointment, please send an email to or call us at 843-769-2229.

Laser FAQs

We thought you would find this information useful about laser hair removal/reduction. Feel free to call to ask any question you may have if you need more explanation.

What is laser hair removal?
Laser Hair Removal is the permanent reduction of hair using light energy to remove hair follicles.

How does is work? (Simple)
The laser light passes through the outer layer of skin and is selectively absorbed by the hair follicle. The laser energy heats the pigment in the hair and effectively disables the hair follicle.

How does is work? (More explanative)
To understand Laser Hair Removal, it is good to understand the phases of hair growth. There are three phases of hair growth. Only one of them will be affected by laser treatment. The three phases are: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen. The laser disables those follicles in the anagen or "active" phase of the hair growth cycle. (80-85% of hair follicles are at some point in the anagen phase). The catagen phase is the phase of regression. During this phase, cell division stops and the lower portion of the follicle is reabsorbed by the surrounding cells. Those follicles in the telogen, or "resting or dormant" phase, will not be affected by laser treatment. The laser works by slowing the growing capacity of follicles in the anagen growth cycle. In essence, laser hair removal kills only those hairs that are in the growing or anagen phase. You should know that removing hair by laser treatment does not cause it to grow back thicker, darker, or quicker. Instead, hair treated with laser grows back thinner and slower.

What Is Involved In Laser Hair Removal?
Laser Hair Removal uses low-energy light to gently remove unwanted hair. Long-lasting results are now possible with laser technology. Laser treatments will leave your skin looking and feeling silkier and smoother. Laser Hair Removal is a three-step process. The area to be treated is gently cleansed and shaved. Next, the area is scanned with the laser. The laser's energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. The pulses from the laser are about one per second so in a fraction of a second, all of the treated hair follicles are disabled. Treatments can go very quickly.

What makes laser hair removal better than electrolysis?
Electrolysis often requires hundreds of hours to years of treatment at regular intervals. It is an invasive and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each hair follicle to deliver an electrical charge. By using a laser system, we deliver light energy to hundreds of hair at a time, taking seconds instead of minutes.

What is my first visit like?
The evening before or the morning of your appointment, we have you shave the area to be treated. We will do the laser procedure and you can leave immediately after the session is completed. Please arrive a few minutes early as we will start on time.

How often do I have to come to the office?
We have to treat 4 weeks apart to get good results. From our experience at least 4 to 6 sessions should be expected to get the results you want. Remember, in our office we schedule so you’ll never have to wait. You’ll be in and out quickly!

Will I be able to resume my daily activities after a treatment?
Yes, there is absolutely no down time. You can reapply makeup or go back to your normal routine, including work, immediately. Sunscreen should always be worn.

Will more than one session be necessary?
The number of treatments required for long-term benefits depends on the area being treated, your hair density, and your hair's growth cycle. Many factors influence hair growth: age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication, and metabolism all play a part in your hair's location, thickness and resilience. In essence, the number of sessions required depends on the individual.

What does the process feel like?
First, there is a cool feeling from the contact of the laser source tip and then there is a slight tingling sensation from the laser light itself. Most patients tolerate the procedure well, but some areas of the body are more sensitive than other areas. Topical anesthesia is always available for those who may have sensitive skin.

Is laser treatment painful?
Laser hair removal is considered a very comfortable procedure, especially when compared to electrolysis hair removal. The Cynosure laser was designed with a chilled hand piece which desensitizes the area and minimizes discomfort. It is quick and efficient. For those clients who are more sensitive, an anesthetic cream can be applied before treatments. For further information on the Cynosure system click here or click the link below.

Are any special preparations needed?
Any concerns you have will be discussed at your free consultation. It is always a good idea to write your questions down before your first visit. At the initial phase of your laser treatments, there are some preparations needed. You must avoid direct sunlight one week before as well as one week after your first treatment. You must also avoid bleaching 7 days before treatment and discontinue tweezing and waxing at least 4 weeks before for optimum results. Shaving is permissible. However, you should allow some slight hair growth to occur so the laser technician can see the pattern of hair growth being treated.

What areas can be treated?
Face, legs, arms, underarms, shoulders and back, as well as sensitive areas like the chest and bikini-line can be treated by laser

Eyebrows?
We do only the portion of the eyebrow that is in between the eyebrows the so called "unibrow". It has recently been suggested at the Society for Lasers In Medicine and Surgery meetings that only this area be treated to prevent eye problems. So in the best interest of our patients this is the only area we will treat. We have other procedures to help you with other areas of the eyebrows.

What happens to the area treated after laser treatments?
Slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn, may occur in some clients. These effects typically last 24 hours or less. After laser treatment, hairs will continue to grow for approximately 1 to 2 weeks. This is called "the purging stage", and those hairs will eventually fall out leaving you with sleek, beautiful skin.

How successful is the treatment? Will the hair return?
Laser hair removal is very successful. The length of laser hair removal treatment depends on each person's makeup and body chemistry. But once hair follicles have been treated and destroyed, they can no longer produce hair. Hair that is entering the anagen phase (growth phase) after laser treatment will need to be treated again.

How many treatments are required?
Research indicates that between 20% and 30% of the hair follicles are in the growing or in anagen stage at any time. As a result, multiple treatments are required. The actual number varies from one individual to the next, but our experience indicates that 3 to 6 treatments at four to six weeks apart are best for optimal effect.

Does it work on light colored hair?
Blond-NO! Light brown –maybe, but worth trying. Dark and coarse-the best results!

Do you treat men?
Yes, we treat lots of men. Typical areas include the back, chest, face, neck, buttocks, shoulders, eyebrows and ears.

What if I am African American, Asian, Indian, Greek, Persian or of other ethnicity?
With our laser we have treated many men and women of all ethnicities without complication and with excellent results.

Is it expensive? How much does it cost?
When compared to a lifetime of waxing, shaving, or purchasing depilatory creams, laser hair removal is affordable. Prices vary for each patient depending on the type of laser procedure, area of the body to be treated, and the number of treatments needed.

What form of payment is acceptable?
The New Body Center accepts cash, checks, Master Card, Visa, Debit Card, or you may take advantage of one of our convenient financing options. We provide a comfortable atmosphere for all our clients and a free consultation. For more information, please call (843) 769-2229

Do you do other Laser Procedures?
Yes, we perform many laser procedures including spider vein and varicose vein removal. We also do laser ablation of many facial blemishes including warts, vessels, wrinkles, redness, increased pigment changes, and other skin discolorations. We also perform a popular procedure called facial laser rejuvenation. This procedure produces a more vibrant, more youthful appearing skin by rejuvenating age and sun damaged skin. The laser reduces pore size and stimulates your own collagen to lift, firm, and improve your skin tone.

Why should I choose The New Body Center for my hair removal?
At The New Body Center we believe that only trained medical professionals should be using cosmetic lasers. Dr. Robinson and his technicians are well trained and experienced and are leaders in their field. Dr. Robinson attends classes and seminars all over the country on cosmetic laser physics, procedures, and applications so that he can offer current state of the art laser services.
