Botox® Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox injections use a chemical called onobotulinumtoxinA, produced by the microbe that causes botulism, to temporarily prevent muscles from moving. Botox is primarily used to reduce facial wrinkles, calm an overactive bladder, and treat neck spasms, excessive sweating, and migraines.

What are the benefits of Botox?

Cosmetically, Botox injections treat fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead between the eyes, called frown lines, and the crow’s feet lines around the eyes.

How does Botox work?

Botox injections block nerve signals and muscle contractions temporarily to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines between the eyebrows around the eyes. Botox also helps prevent new lines from forming by preventing facial muscle contraction.

Botox injections do not require general anesthesia, incisions, or a hospital stay and are minimally invasive. Dr. Robinson administers Botox using ice to numb the treatment area or a topical anesthetic. Each treatment takes about 10 minutes.

To achieve a natural result, you must choose a qualified doctor who’s both trained and experienced in Botox administration, such as Dr. Robinson. He will evaluate your individual needs and complete medical history to determine if Botox is safe for you.

Are Botox injections safe?

The FDA has approved Botox for use as a cosmetic enhancing agent. Because only small amounts are injected in localized areas, no severe side effects occur. Some patients may experience tenderness or temporary bruising at the site of injection.

Are results from Botox immediate?

There is little to no downtime after a Botox treatment, but noticeable results typically occur 1-2 days after the procedure. Botox results last about four months, and you can repeat treatments to maintain your results.

When is the best time to receive Botox?

Many patients choose to have Botox before a wedding, reunion, or another kind of significant event. Because results peak a few days after the injection, and there’s little risk of bruising, Botox should be administered three to four weeks before any major event.

What are dermal fillers?

Fillers are soft gels that can be injected beneath the skin’s surface to restore fullness by smoothing facial lines and wrinkles. Many patients who elect to get dermal fillers have the following areas treated:

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
  • Marionette lines (lines beginning at the corner of the mouth and extending downward)
  • Lips

Dermal fillers are made to closely resemble hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the human body. The results of dermal fillers last as long as six to nine months, making this treatment both convenient and affordable.

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

Many patients choose dermal fillers because they replace lost fat and fullness in the face, which gives them a boost in self-confidence.

Dermal fillers can also improve the appearance of scars, soften facial creases, and decrease the shadow of the lower lids.
